Twelve Seattle-area high school volleyball teams have already logged over 40 hours of summer conditioning by July 11 as they chase berths in the WIAA state tournament scheduled for November 12 through 14 at the Tacoma Dome.
The timing carries weight because the WIAA released its 2026 classification and seeding criteria on July 2, shifting three Seattle programs into larger enrollment brackets and forcing immediate adjustments to nonconference schedules.
Ballard High School athletes train on the outdoor courts at 14th Avenue Northwest and West 65th Street while Roosevelt High School players use the gym at 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 66th Street; both schools added new assistant coaches this spring to handle expanded junior varsity rosters.
WIAA participation data shows 9,872 girls competed in volleyball across the state last fall, with King County schools supplying 1,412 of those athletes and Seattle Public Schools accounting for 287 of them; average ticket prices for regular-season matches rose to $9 this year.
Ballard opens league play September 9 against Ingraham at Memorial Stadium on the Seattle Center campus, a venue that hosted eight Seattle league finals last season. Roosevelt faces a September 16 road test at Franklin High School in the Mount Baker neighborhood before a home rematch on October 7. Both dates fall inside the first three weeks of the regular season, when coaches say early losses can eliminate teams from top-seed consideration under the new WIAA formula.
Teams that finish in the top two of their KingCo divisions advance to the November 5-7 regional tournaments held at sites in Bellevue and Federal Way. From there, the top four squads in each classification reach the state bracket. District athletic directors will distribute printed schedules at the Seattle Public Schools central office on Fourth Avenue South starting July 18, with online registration for season passes priced at $48 opening the same day.
